ROCKS! - Over time the rocks become naturalised as plants grow into them. Remember that without rocks, your pond wont be natural at all - bare liner is not a natural surface, it's a bag of water! Rocks support a mass of beneficial microbes which clean the water.
When people say a grass edged pond is natural, this is completely un-true, because the liner below the water is the least natural pond one could imagine.

A swim pond ^ using ecosystem filtration AND NOT the old school method of a surrounding gravel bed (as they are not easy to maintain). All of our ponds are self-cleaning, use no factory filters, no UV lights, no chemicals.
It all starts with the dig, as you can see we establish sharp lines from the get-go. Many ponds aren't correctly shaped and also include sloping internal elevations which lead to materials sliding down inside the pond and make maintenance more cumbersome and dangerous. Establishing a marginal shelf near the top, gives a good stable foundation and allows for aquatic planting.
Creating naturalistic and properly functioning waterfalls takes a lot of experience and artistry. Waterfalls should never resemble a simplistic staircase. Nor should the height be incongruous relative to your space. Leaky waterfalls are guaranteed unless being built to the very highest standard.
Above is a medium-small wildlife pond with ecosystem filtration built-in. Wildlife finds it much harder to access the pump as it is not sitting in open water.
Above, one of our fish ponds, not cleaned in 18 months, barely any sludge, gin clear water. In the background we created rock caves as refuges for the fish, this makes heron predation more difficult.
